A Canadian buyer's guide — updated for 2026

Every retailer,
inspected before you buy.

Natural and lab-grown diamond wedding bands from the biggest names now look nearly identical online. We put each retailer through the same certificate-style review — pricing, selection, shipping to Canada, and what happens if something goes wrong — so you don't have to open a dozen tabs to compare them.

First, the basics

Natural or lab-grown — what actually differs

Both are genuine diamonds: same crystal structure, same hardness, same fire and sparkle, both graded on the same 4Cs scale. The difference is origin, cost, and what each one signals.

NATURAL

Formed over billions of years

Extracted, not manufactured — a finite resource with a geological origin story and, historically, stronger recognition on resale and appraisal.

LAB-GROWN

Grown in weeks, not eons

Produced on demand under controlled conditions. Typically 60–85% less than a natural stone of comparable size and grade — the gap that makes comparing retailers worth doing.

BOTH

Same grading, same care

Independent labs (GIA, IGI) grade both categories on cut, colour, clarity and carat, and both wear and clean the same way over decades.

The Ledger

Eight retailers, graded like a certificate

We reuse a version of the diamond industry's own 4Cs — repointed at the retailer, not the stone — so you're comparing the buying experience on consistent terms: Experience (Cut), Selection (Colour), Transparency (Clarity), Value (Carat). Filter by which stone type you're shopping for.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. It has the same crystal structure and the same optical, chemical and physical properties as a mined diamond — the only difference is where it formed and how long it took.

They're priced for beauty and durability, not as an investment — and like mined diamonds, resale value is low. Prices have also been falling as production scales, which benefits buyers but not resale.

It depends on order value and current trade rules, which change. Confirm directly with the retailer and, if in doubt, the CBSA before you order — this isn't tax or customs advice.

Through affiliate commissions if you buy after clicking through — full detail on our disclosure page. It never changes how a retailer is graded.
